The leader of the band is Bedřich Šmarda, a saxophonist who is one of the few musicians in the Czech Republic who has direct experience with the Czech specificity, which is a strict authentic interpretation of old jazz, specifically swing of the 1930s. This gives him, in addition to his usual bebop punch, a rare ability for a completely different, more subtle musical articulation typical of musicians playing before 1945. He has collaborated with one of the fundamental classical formations, the lesser known but renowned Jan Matoušek’s Swingband, as well as with the stylistically more benevolent, but on the other hand more famous, orchestra of Ondřej Havelka’s Melody Makers. He studied at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College. He has played with the Czech Radio Jazz Orchestra and with important artists such as Milan Svoboda and Karel Růžička.
